These children, upon reunion with their mothers after the brief separation built into the strange situation design, seemed to avoid contact with their mothers, maintaining an emotional and physical distance, and tended to treat their mothers much as they did strangers.

A sense of self-agency and self-efficacy are presumed to be linked to social and interpersonal competence, and hence are central to personal satisfaction and social connectedness. Security in relationships and internalized representations of people, experiences, and expectations are at the same time both the outcome of the attachment experience and the ongoing force that shapes attached relationships.
