In the search for an answer it must be borne in mind that there is no clear and straightforward association between the actions of the network member and network position, as Ronald Burt (1993, 63–103) observes in his studies of the windows of opportunity offered by the network. That association will largely depend on the nature of the social ties within the network (loyalty, trust, pursuit of self-interest). Furthermore, the degree to which network members’ actions are driven by self-interest varies from one situation to the next.

This is apparent at least when the operation of the markets threatens to marginalize increasing segments of the population and when they become a threat to themselves. In this chapter I have referred, as consistently as possible, to ‘the markets’ in the plural. The reason for this is that although neo-liberal economic theory wants us to believe that only one ideal model of a market exists, that ideal doesn’t in fact exist outside the imagination of these theorists. The application of this model seems to highlight certain negative features and effects of the markets.

In this instance singularization involves removing the commodity from the circle of exchange and reserving it exclusively for private use. Sometimes it can even be removed from use after it has been acquired. An example of the former is the practice of giftgiving; an example of the latter is private collecting. Collecting is the reverse side of gift-giving. It is a special case of consumption proper (Benjamin 2003 [1939]). The collector’s passion is to remove a commodity from its cycle of circulation and turn it into an item freed of its technical/functional use value.
